BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend: From Coldplay to NewDad

Emma Harrison

BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend is living up to its name this year with a huge variety of artists from around the world performing over four stages from Friday 24th May to Sunday the 26th,marking the start of the UK’s festival season. This year it is set to take place in Luton with over 100,000 music lovers expected to flock there to enjoy the performances, the atmosphere and hopefully, with a bit of luck, some sun.

The Friday sees chart-topping artists like Chase & Status, Becky Hill and Rudimental taking to the Radio 1 Main Stage to kick off the festival, with Diplo, Eric Prydz, Hannah Laing and other, lesser-known artists performing on the Radio 1 New Music Stage.

Radio 1 Main Stage headline acts on the Saturday include Aitch, Griff, Mabel and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man with Raye as the final act of the night; expected to end the penultimate night with a bang with her smooth Pop, R&B vocals and her down-to-earth stage presence.

Saturday’s Radio 1 New Music Stage has a wide range of artists and music genres, with performances from pop icon Charli XCX, and soon to be pop icon, Caity Baser. More alternative acts also take the stage, including Indie pop artist, Alfie Templeman and Brit Award winners The Last Dinner Party with their unique indie-rock, baroque-pop

sound. If you would prefer to listen to Electronic Dance Music, then Shygirl is also set to

perform on this stage.

The festival ends on Sunday with Main Stage performances from Declan McKenna, Sabrina

Carpenter and Vampire Weekend. Coldplay is the last act on the Sunday and will provide an

undoubtedly energetic finale to the weekend's festivities. The Radio 1 New Music Stage will see the likes of beabadoobee, Olivia Dean, CMAT, Sea Girls and more performing on the last day of the festival.

There are two other stages that will provide even more choice of performances to watch over the weekend, with acts like DJ Kizzi, Ammara, ESSEL and more on the Dance Stage, and a variety of budding artists on the BBC Introducing Stage. The acts to watch out for on this stage would be NewDad, a shoegaze rock band from Galway, taking to the stage on Saturday. Their music has been compared to bands like The Cure and Wolf Alice by NME magazine. Also, Etta Marcus, an alternative artist who was one of the acts opening for Lana Del Rey’s legendary BST Hyde Park show in July last year. Marcus’ sound has been compared to artists like Lana herself, with moody lyrics akin to Phoebe Bridgers’ songs. She is taking to the BBC Introducing stage on the Sunday of the festival, and is definitely one of the budding, must-see acts of the weekend.

Spanning from Becky Hill to Sea Girls, there really is something for everyone at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend, and with day tickets costing only £29.50 plus a small booking fee, it is definitely an unmissable day out! Tickets went on sale at 5pm on Thursday 21st March and were highly sought-after, with the Sunday tickets quickly selling out and, presumably, the other day tickets not too far behind.
